Data and Facts about the Kalikai

The "Kalikai" storage and handling facility at the port of Hamburg is the cornerstone of our business. We maintain warehouse and silo storage for dry bulk goods with a total capacity of 405,000 tons on a site covering an area of more than 95,000 square meters.

Here, we handle about 500 ships a year, mostly sea-going but also inland waterway vessels, at the 500 m long quay. Using three bulk loaders, we achieve very high loading speeds. Two grabs are available for unloading. This enables us to handle 3.5 - 4.5 million tons per year.

Over 90% of the export volume is delivered by rail and discharged into two underground bunker systems with a nominal capacity of 26,000 tons per day.

The "Kalikai" is number one in the export of bulk goods at the port of Hamburg. We are also responding to changes in the market with efficient technical structures and an effective, flexible team: Because of the enormous increase in freight rates for large vessels, we now load hundreds of thousands of tons of bulk goods in containers, which are distributed from the "Kalikai" to various terminals by lorry and then shipped to the Far East mainly. By keeping costs comparatively attractive, we can thus maintain and develop our market positions.
